"How do I contact the police or the lost-and-found office?"

You're unlikely to get mugged or molested in Venice's Santa Lucia station, but watch out for pickpockets and luggage thieves.

Venice Polizia Ferroviaria signIf you're a crime victim, look for the "Polizia Ferroviaria" service booth near the platforms or, if it's unoccupied, go to the police office in the open corridor alongside Track 1. (You'll need to file a crime report to get reimbursement from your insurance company back home.)

If you've misplaced an item on a train or in the station, visit the Ufficio Oggetti Rinvenuti next to track 14 or telephone +39 041-785-238 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Need a car in Europe?

Auto Europe guarantees the lowest rental rates for standard cars, sports cars, SUVs, luxury cars, chauffered sedans, and RVs. Its Web site also has driving information for 38 countries.

If you live outside the EU, a tax-free Renault or Peugeot tourist lease can be cheaper than renting. Minimum driver age is 18, there' s no upper age limit, and rates include insurance. See: Short-term car leasing.
