Sherkin Island

from Walking in Ireland

photo

A 15th Century friary, the Mainster Inis Arcain, is just uphill from the ferry pier. It's one of two ruins on the island, the other being Dun-na-Long Castle, which was the seat of the O'Driscoll Clan. The two buildings were heavily damaged in 1537 when citizens of Waterford invaded the island after a dispute over a seized and plundered ship.
