Map of Venice hotels near the Piazzale Roma.

The hotels on the map above are within five and 10 minutes on foot from airport buses and taxis in the Piazzale Roma, Venice's gateway for motorized traffic. From the Piazzale Roma, you can easily reach the Marittima cruise terminals (by People Mover tram or land taxi) or the San Basilio and Santa Marta cruise piers (by land taxi).

Click the links in the hotel descriptions for step-by-step walking directions (with custom maps) to each hotel.

Our first two hotels are near the top of the map. They're easy to reach by crossing a low stone footbridge from the Piazzale Roma and skirting a public park, the Papadopoli Gardens:

Hotel Canal e Walter photo

Hotel Canal & Walter (3 stars) has 33 rooms, some overlooking the Grand Canal. One- to four-person rooms are available, and breakfast is served in the hotel's garden courtyard during summer.

Hotel Gardena

Hotel Gardena (3 stars) is about 3 minutes from the Piazzale Roma, with two tiny bridges to cross, but you might think it's in a different world: The hotel is on a delightful neighborhood canal, and the cafés along the water are often filled with students and professors from the architectural university nearby.

This reasonably-priced hotel is almost due east of the Piazzale Roma, across a small bridge from the four-star Hotel Papadopoli Venezia (see previous page):

Albergo ai Tolentini photo

Hotel ai Tolentini (1 star) is less than 10 minutes from the Piazzale Roma, assuming that you don't stop to read your map. Although the albergo (Italian for "hotel") is toward the lower end of the rate scale, its rooms are air-conditioned, and all rooms have private baths.

The following hotels are five to 10 minutes from the Piazzale Roma, and they're easy to find if you follow our directions for each:

Palazzo Odoni photo

Palazzo Odoni  is a luxury B&B in a 15th Century Venetian Gothic mansion built around a central courtyard. The proprietors have lived in the palace for five generations, and many of the building's furnishings are family heirlooms.

Hotel Falier photo

Hotel Falier (two stars) is just to the east of the Palazzo Odoni and Hotel Al Sole. Like its more expensive neighbors, it has a garden. From the hotel, it's only a short walk to the Frari Church or one of our favorite squares in Venice, the Campo Santa Margherita, which is lined with restaurants, shops, and cafés.

Hotel dalla Mora sign photo

Hotel dalla Mora (1 star) is a budget hotel, but it has an excellent reputation, and its location captures the essence of romantic Venice: The Hotel dalla Mora faces a canal and is extremely close to the Campo Santa Margherita. It also has a terrace overlooking the water.

The final two hotels on our list are about 10 minutes from the Piazzale Roma, on a canal that's lively with water-taxi and barge traffic.

Hotel Moresco photo

Hotel Moresco (4 stars) is a great choice if you enjoy watching boat traffic, especially if you book a double or twin with canal view. The hotel has a walled garden, a small library-study, and a bar. In addition to a 19th Century decorating scheme, the hotel has such 21st Century amenities as programmable RGB bathroom lighting and individual Wi-Fi access points for each bedroom and public room.

Apartments near Piazzale Roma:

If you'd like to settle in for a few days before or after a cruise, or if you prefer self-catering flats to hotels and restaurants, a vacation apartment is worth considering. Several are extremely close to the Piazzale Roma and the People Mover to the Marittima cruise terminals:

  • Venicedire is located right next to the Piazzale Roma. It's a very modern one-bedroom flat on the ground floor (three steps up from the sidewalk), making it convenient if you have heavy luggage. The living room has a sofa bed. As a bonus, you can park on site (albeit for a steep daily fee).

  • Sofia is a nicely renovated apartment on the Fondamenta Santa Chiara, by the vaporetto platforms and not far from the Santa Chiara Hotel. It's very atmospheric, thanks to its exposed roof beams and joists, and it has plenty of space for families, with a bedroom plus three sofa beds in the living room.

  • Le Burchielle is close to Piazzale Roma on the Fondamenta Burchielle, down the street from the Best Western Hotel Olimpia. It has two bedrooms (one with a queen bed, the other with two twins) and has a light, modern, airy decor.

  • Garden Houses are a few short streets and two small bridges away from Piazzale Roma, a block bey0nd the Alloggi Marinella and Il Veliero Romantico (see previous page). Three apartments are available: A two-bedroom split-level with terrace, a one-bedroom with terrace, and an upstairs one-bedroom without terrace.
